Bisected by 13 rivers and mountain-fed streams, Meru is a marvel of geographical diversity.

The park teems with a rich array of wildlife, including iconic species such as elephant, Grevy’s zebra, lion, cheetah, leopard, hartebeest, hippo, and buffalo. Bird enthusiasts will delight in the park’s exceptional avian diversity, with over 400 bird species recorded, including rare sightings such as Peter’s Fin foot and Pel’s fishing owl. The rivers and waterways are inhabited by hippo populations, crocodiles, and various fish species, adding to the park’s ecological richness.

Meru National Park holds historical significance as the setting for Joy Adamson’s renowned book ‘Born Free,’ documenting her life and research among lions and cheetahs. The legacy of Elsa the lioness, famously depicted in the book, lives on within the park, where her grave is marked.

Bordering Meru National Park is the Bisanadi National Reserve, known as “Kinna,” a true wilderness that offers further exploration opportunities for intrepid visitors. Activities within the park range from traditional game viewing and camping to picnicking, hiking, and even swimming in the pool adjacent to the Bwatherongi (Kinna) bandas. Cultural experiences await at the gates of the park, where visitors can immerse themselves in the rich heritage of the Ameru, Borana, and Tharaka communities.
